Like An Old Time Country Song
(by Coal)
You are right and I am wrong
Like in an old time country song
You’ve got your truth and I’ve got mine
Like strangers walking, crossing lines
I know you’re holding something back
Behind your teeth
Don’t put me on trial
Lawyers can’t justify it
All we can do is simplify it
I’ve come around to all your neighborhoods
I got lost like a lamb in the woods
I found out that who I am
and who I want me to be are not the same man
If you’re handing me a ticket for a guilt trip
Make it a one-way
Don’t put me on trial
lawyers can’t justify it
All we can do is simplify it
Put a record on and turn up the gramophone
“Let me spin you around” the country singer moans
Let’s not see how the story ends but how it goes
Like in a black and white motion picture show
Don’t put me on trial
lawyers can’t justify it
All we can do is simplify it
Like in an old time country song
And a black and white motion picture show

Trapped On Track

Trapped On Track
(by Coal & Charlie Zimmerman)
The sky turns to fire
And I’m not inspired
I’m burning red
Turn into blue then black
Cold hands tonight
Holding me too tight
I’m trapped on track
I’m all packed but I’m trapped on track
You came into my life
You took me by surprise
I’m overwhelmed
You make me feel like I’ve never felt before
How ‘bout you?
I know I shouldn’t compete
But you’re a head of me
I’m trapped on track
You gotta have my back I’m trapped on track
I do time, in a restless mind
I count to three then make a wish
One two three set me free
I’m trapped on track
All this analyzing
Is paralyzing me
like a stone
As I sink into the deep unknown
This can’t be my fate
There’s got to be a way to escape
I’m trapped on track
Who’s gonna help me I’m trapped on track
I do time, in a restless mind
Count to three then make a wish
One two three set me free
I’m trapped on track

Beautiful Sue

Beautiful Sue
(by Coal)
Back when we had dreams of places we’d go
Our ears tuned into dad’s old radio
We’d sit and listen to the far distance
Now I can only hope she’ll be back to tell
About the big world that I’ve missed
I’ve become a name on a factory list
Where have you been beautiful Sue?
Where are you going can’t you take me with you?
She scatters her heart from west to east
And flies upon the wing of a cool summer breeze
Her beauty’s exposed like the thorns of a rose
One thorn she left pinned to my chest
And you know the rest but there’s one difference
I never dared to be more then a friend
Where have you been beautiful Sue?
Where are you going can’t you take me with you?
By and by I’ll find another and we’ll settle down
Start a family to keep safe and sound
I chose to seek happiness nearby
Why, Sue would be the kind to take flight
Where have you been?
Where are you going?
Where have you been?
Where are you going can’t you take me with you?

Trust is a Choice
(by Coal, Sarah Bowmans & Charlie Zimmerman)
It’s come to the time
Don’t need a reason
Under dimmed stage lights
I’m closing the curtain
I had one foot on the wire
But doubted the other
Had I been given the sky
while I could only think of falling?
I know it all means so much
You asked me to give myself up
Now the quiet is filled with noise
I reach out to hear your voice
I learned to capture and write
all the things I couldn’t tell
but the ink had run dry
I never got to the point
an empty poet inside
at the crest of a dawn
I thought you asked for too much
That what you gave was what you took
Now the quiet is filled with noise
I reach out and hear your voice
Trust is a choice and I’m learning it these days
since you turned away
I know it all means so much
You asked me to give myself up
Now the quiet is filled with noise
I reach out and hear your voice

It’s Not The Time
(by Coal)
Won’t you please turn this off? Don’t you know?
There’s a time and place for everything
Soon you will go away from me
So please won’t you turn this off? Don’t you know?
It’s this melody that will see me through
And I need this one thing to keep for my own
Whispers and rattling
Ghosts of old love are getting ready
This is the place where the fight will be
But it’s not the time
Even if what loss tells us is true no one can ever
Take away the dances we’ve had me and you
In our happily ever after
Even if what loss tells us is true I will never
Have this rhythm with anyone new
We tore up our worlds to be together
Chatters and clambering
Ghosts of old love are armed and ready
This is the place where the fight will be
But it’s not the time
Some days I could die or try to get back to you to erase the pain
Other days I will doubt you down to the bone
I’ll get love sick, close to insane
Along the way I’ll be swept into the melody again
and my heart will be at peace
So come on in ghosts of old love
I’m not afraid, no need to be ready
This is the place where the fight will be
But it’s not the time
This is the place where the fight will be
But it’s not the time

For Love's Sake

For Love’s Sake
(by Coal)
Yesterday’s heat hangs in the street
Climbs into the room with a weight heavy as concrete
In the close distance deep thunder roars
I’m shaking to the core
Knock knock – Is it you? Are you here for good?
Did you come to say you’re sorry? I thought you never would
My body is tense my brain is growing weak
My heart has sprung a leak
Here we are now making it all a matter of self-respect
We’re two suspicious lovers with too much to lose and protect
We both lie in wait for the other to make
The first mistake
Then in anger words slip out through a one-way door
They fire like shots, ricochet across the floor
We become the victims of a self-inflicted crime
Scorch the meat and poison the wine
This room breath like a vacuum
Can’t anyone defuse this bomb?
The mighty sky is coming down
This must be where the story ends
You want to know how long you could stay
By now it all depends
Did you come for love’s sake?
Do you want me for love’s sake?
I’m scared for love’s sake
Tell me you’re here for love’s sake
People kill for love’s sake
Did you come ‘cause you have nowhere else to go?

Ropes Of Sand

Ropes Of Sand
(by Coal & David Campbell Jr.)
Wish me well I’m on my way to drown myself in a wishing well
Why I do so, you want to know, to only you my friend I will tell
There was a long longing that started drawing lies upon my eyes
I saw a castle in the air that I could share with a beautiful bride
Each morning I rose with the sun, I knew someday she would come my way
I yearned until the moon came out which lined silver clouds where we would lay
When she appeared out of the rain she handed me a grain for us to grow
I felt the harvest time would yield a golden field but how was I to know
I was climbing up ropes of sand
Holding up hopes of sand
Crumbling in my hands
When this tearless world crash-lands
Last surviving lies will be revealed
What’s left is real
She filled me like a breath of spring but there’s one thing she could never be
A girl without a history who always smiles and never disagrees
So my friend we’ve reached the end to the bottom of the wishing well I’ll dive
I’ll drain the well or drown myself; I’ll pull the plug so love can be revived
I was climbing up ropes of sand
Holding up hopes of sand
Crumbling in my hands
When this tearless world crash-lands
Last surviving lies will be revealed
There’s something in my head I need to heal

A Proposal To The Road
(by Coal)
We’ve proposed to the road
Where memories are stories left untold
It doesn’t count what town we’re in it’s all the same
Just changing the name again and again
Through mountains I can hear echoes from the past
It rings between my ears nothing really lasts
Pack the fiddle, lose the breaks, we’re on a road that goes on & on
Together forever
For better or for worse it’s a blessing it’s a curse
Miles are yearning wheels are burning
Don’t look into the rear view to those who might miss you
And try to tie you down
Through mountains I can hear echoes from the past
It rings between my ears nothing really lasts
We play all night, drive all day on a road that goes on & on
We’ve proposed to the road
Where memories are stories left untold
Nowhere is where we belong
Anywhere is where we’re at home
We don’t plan on stopping now on a road that goes on & on

Lose Sleep At Night
(by Coal)
Daylight takes the night
The world wakes without waiting for me to rise
Morning’s lost on the fog
Thick like the thoughts I can’t sort out anymore
Because I lose sleep at night
There’s no explanation to be found
I guess our love burned from the inside out
The last light lingered in our bedroom
It kept me holding on to a dream so tight
And now I lose sleep at night
Maybe I should thank you
Maybe you were right
Maybe we met the end of our carriage ride
But why do I lose sleep at night?
I’m walking through quiet darkness
I’m close to finding well deserved rest
I’m reading the stars written in the sky above
The signs are against us no matter how I’m in love
I don’t want to lose sleep at night
Maybe I should thank you
Maybe you were right
Maybe we met the end of our carriage ride
But why do I lose sleep at night?

Take This World For A Spin
(by Coal & Charlie Zimmerman)
From the deepest depth up to the sky
Even the darkest doubt has the light of not needing to know why
Who ever gets to live has to die
We all get easily confused
Trying to paint a picture with crumbling colors of truth
It’s the bloom and the doom of youth
Let’s see what this next round will bring
Like the tide coming in or the falling leaves dancing in the wind
Take this great world for a spin
We are made of flesh and bone
Can’t keep from growing older either with someone or alone
We’re but pieces trying to feel whole with a lifetime to fulfill
Someday you’ll see what the last round will bring
With the tide coming in and the falling leaves dancing in the wind
Take this great world for a spin - take it for a spin
From the deepest depth up to the sky
Even the darkest doubt has the light of not needing to know why
Who ever gets to live has to die
Who ever has to die was given life
